hello - first post
Hello everyone,
I jumped in with both feet last year, planting a dozen 3-gal in July, and another six in Sept. Working around huge live oaks and a drainfield on a 1/4-acre lot, there's room for "a couple more", but I can wait & make very careful choices on those, will no doubt seek advice here.
Oldhamii are the only ones shooting so far. I was all excited about some 3/4" diam. shoots until I spied a new one just yesterday 1 1/4" - 1 1/2" diam. This summer's going to be great!
OK, my question: Who else has b. emeiensis (standard) or b. text. maculata? Love mine, haven't seen them mentioned much, if at all.

Welcome to the forum. I know, by the plants you listed, you live somewhere that you can grow tropical bamboos, but if you would put in your location, then you would not have people asking you "Where are you located!"

Roy,
Had to locate the UCP and its host of options. Not so far from you, as you see. Sent you a rambling message once in my first rush of bamboo-thusiasm. You advised signing up here, and I guess it took the new growth to get me motivated.

Well my guess would be that not too many people have them. Perhaps you will tell us what drew you to these 2 plants and that you "love them". I don't have either one of them and I've never been around anywhere (or anyone) they were growing. I don't know any first hand information about them.awi poek wrote:Hello everyone,

Roy needs to visit us in Texas; we are filthy with maculata.
Heck, if you visit (Roy) I'll even dig you a piece to bring back to FL with you.
I don't have the standard emeiensis, but I do have B. e. 'Flavidovirens' and B. e. ''Viridiflavus'. The Viridiflavus is currently shooting.

Re: hello - first post
So, how is this B. tex. 'maculata' different for these? Truly different. Not just what is listed in the Source List, but true differences? 25 feet by 1 inch and purple streaks? Is that the normal size in Texas? How does it compare in looks to B. tex. 'gracilis'?mantis wrote:Roy needs to visit us in Texas; we are filthy with maculata.Heck, if you visit (Roy) I'll even dig you a piece to bring back to FL with you.

Re: hello - first post
It's a cross between glabra and gracilis. No purple stripes, more open than gracilis.
Outlaw has all 3 in the ground and there are definite differences between all three. He might have more input.

I would assume that Bambusa emeiensis looks like my shade grown Bambusa emeiensis 'Viridiflavus' (no yellow stripes).

Re: hello - first post
I will take a look at the textilis tomorrow and post. The Gracilis, Maculata and Gracilis are all planted by each other so will have a good comparison with same enviromental considerations. I will be out mowing at day break and can see then.

Gracilis is a tighter clumper.
Maculata is more open which causes the culms to lean out due to lack of support from surrounding culms. The culms are less green, even in total shade like these other two. I have never seen one anywhere with the stripes.
Glabra is an open clumper. Glabra has larger culms than the other two. The culms are much greener than Maculata even Gracilis.
Three different plants, correct names? Who knows... All these came from Brent thru Darwin many years ago.

Thanks Steve. That's good information to know. My regular B. textilis and B. Tex. "Kanapabilis" do not have branch buds on the lower culms. My B. tex. gracilis, for the most part, does have branch buds on the lower portion, even though most branch buds don't branch out. What about the Maculata and Glabra? Do they have branch buds on the lower culm nodes?

Re: hello - first post
Man, I was away (& away from internet connections) for a few days, things got busy on maculata & emeiensis -- thanks, folks.
One each of my two maculata and two emeiensis have "shot" this week, still juvenile 1/2 diam. culms.
Outlaw's comment on the "leaning out" describes my maculata perfectly, but I wondered if eventually more mature thus thicker culms might stand more erect.
The plain emeiensis stands more vertical, but the tips droop over in almost an inverted "U", very nice, and droop further still with the rain.
Speaking of, how about it? A solid week of rain after months & months of drought! Smilin' rhizomes, and no sprinkler-shiftin' for me.
Both the bamboos I asked about are a light but not exactly yellowish green, no stripes on the emeiensis. Will try to get organized with specific descriptions & some photos.
Mantis, I couln't handle the price tag on Flav or Viridifav. Went a little downmarket to Pervarabilis. One of them just shot yesterday, up to almost an inch diam. My favorite thing about this bamboo, besides the striations, are the pink/red young branches. Much smaller, narower leaves than any of my others.
So great to be getting culms with some girth -- all were so spindly at 3-gal. size. Three of five Oldhamii are putting out big shoots.
May has been good. Thanks, everyone.
