Where to find P. vivax 'Aureocaulis'

Where is the best place to get this variety of vivax?

Lots of places have it, but its usually very spendy. I have gotten it from several sources, even one where it was sold as a Phy. aureosulcata Aureocaulis, but its throwing up a typical buttery smooth vivax shoot now. Now I need a Phy. aureosulcata Aureocaulis... though I do have Lama Temple. I had some P. v. A. rhizome to trade earlier in the year. I am traded out of it now.

I just potted up 7 P Vivax Aureocaulis rhizomes in either 3 or 5 gallon pots, but they won't be established any time soon. I still don't even know if they'll shoot either, but I don't mind getting you one before the end of the growing season if It stabilizes well.

A good rhizome division can make some pretty good growth in a year as shown by my P Humilis propagated last spring. I don't even know what I want to do with this one so I'll keep it growing in a pot for now.

vivax grows very well from rhizomes, as opposed to say, nigra that does not do that well (percentage wise). The first year you will get one 3 foot shoot, and it will sit... and grow roots and rhizome. The next year you will get another larger shoot or three, and more rhizomes. The following year you will start to get some impressive shoots. Single culm divisions also do well, and they can send out 6 foot rhizomes in one year. Again, unlike nigra, they are fast to establish after dividing and they size up fast. If it were not for the thin walled culms, it would be higher rated in my collection. As it is, vivax Aureocaulis it is #3, after Allgold and the colored culm aureosulcatas.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but... I did get a large single culm division of P. Vivax "Aureocaulis' the other day. I imagine the rhizome was about 16" long. I pottted it up and it has been in the shade for the last couple of days. It doesn't seem in too bad of shape. The leaves are still looking healthy, occasionally they curl up and don't look so hot. Normally I deal with tropicals so my experience with runners is very limited. I guess my question is in a typical situation, how long before I can tell if it will stabilize and pull through? The division is about 20' to 25' tall single culm and about 1 1/2 to 2 inches in diameter.

Last year I dug three smaller divisions of P. Vivax and two pulled through and survived. Now if only I had a place to plant the runners!!

Did you get an actual root ball, or just a big culm with some rhizome? If the latter, your long term chances for success are not great. If it does survive, it will be a number of months before you can claim victory. I've had a lot of experience taking divisions, and sometimes I'll pot something up and it will look great for 3-4 months, and then go into decline. Good luck, though.

You made a great choice. From my experience, vivax Aureocaulis isn't any less vigorous than plain vivax. It grows fast and looks beautiful.
