A tricky situation for sure. I think it's not unreasonable to tell them straight out "do not dig from my bamboo, because I'm trying to let them get established".

I'm not sure exactly where you planted, but if it's close to a property line, then you could create a line wherever you don't want the bamboo to go in the future and tell them that they can dig anything that comes up on the other side of the line. Maybe it will be a few years until that time though, so you might want to start searching out any existing bamboo groves in your area, and see if you can get some divisions from those. That way when the neighbors come by looking for free bamboo, you can give them an already-potted plant.

Good idea Alan! Shouldn't be too hard to put up some golden bamboo and have that ready.

interesting that they want to dig shoots in the spring- for eating, or planting? I have seen several cases where people thought that the best thing to take was a new shoot,but that would suck to have someone come by and help themselves to all your new shoots for the year!

BBBB Make a whole bunch of cuttings most for your self but extras so when some one asks for some bamboo you can offer them some babys. Then they will respect what you have to do to grow Boo's. The newby bamboophiles will greatly apreciate the offer and the just lazy leaches will back off.
Oh have you got a Parker Giant that might work for you in Zone 9. Still an iffy for that zone.(that is you that moved from 10 to 9???)

I was thinking "runners" when I posted my comments. I know several of the tropical clumpers will grow from culm cuttings -- maybe you can pot up a bunch of those for giveaways?

I've read posts here about people actually cutting up culms, sticking them in pots, and having them grow into new plants. I've never really payed close attention to that since I'm in the wrong climate for those plants, but it seemed quite simple to do.

You could tell the 'askers' that your plan is to sell off any spare divisions to help you recover the cost of your initial investment in your collection so check back as you build up propagule stock.

bambambooboo, I understand your feelings about selling your plants. If I went through the effort of getting my nursery license, etc. I'd for sure sell them, but since I'm just a hobby grower I just give/trade them away (maybe for a 6 pack of beer, or for dirt to fill in the division hole). For fun I'm keeping a list of everything I've given away, and I'm up to 85 bamboos. But in the same light a lot of the bamboos I have in my collection were given to me, so I'm just keeping the universe in balance.

I got to the point where my collection was outgrowing my living space, so I got another 3.5 acres to plant on. As soon as I got that land my collecting went into high gear, and I am now outgrowing that space.

As for node propagation, there have been many posts/threads here that cover the subject. There have also been some recent articles in the ABS Bamboo magazine on the topic. I'll see if I can find some good links for you.

Lastly, I am really interested to see how your B. sp. 'Nana' recovers. Hopefully yours will recover better than mine did after last winter, but then again I hit 18°F last year.

They are still small plantings, so nothing worth taking pictures of. Plus, it wasn't all bamboo... palms, trees, veggie gardens, and I also had to leave room for a barn and 2 houses (our house, and a small guest cabin for relatives). The land already had 100 or so Live Oak trees on it, so it wasn't like it was a clean slate to plant 1000 bamboos.

This will have to satisfy you for the time being...
