Best Squirrel Repellant?

Post by BlackThumbNJ »

Any reqs for squirrel repellant?

Could be another animal, but I see their little digging holes in my Hale pot. Looks like what I see squirrels dig.

Don't think my neighbors would appreciate hunting them with a shotgun.

I have been sprinkling red pepper around my Ph. Aureosuleala aureocaulis. They have left them along untill rain washed it away. Planted 6/3/09 and it had sized up to half inch clums. I have two clums left out of 11. Has got smaller in size though. Going to be tough keeping the pepper out this week with rain forcasted every day this week.

Out of curiosity, do you people with squirrel problems (eating shoots) have bird feeders that are not squirrel-proof, or no bird feeders? I was just wondering if they'd rather eat sunflower seeds than boo shoots, but having no other choice they go for the boo.

If the holes are mouse sized and at a angle I'd be more inclined to suggest a shrew. For the most parts shrews are a beneficial relative of moles that eat insects, worms and on occasion plant roots. So count yourself lucky its not a mole :D

For those looking for it, Korean markets sell huge plastic bags of red hot pepper for making kim chee. It's cheap.

If it's cheap, it's much easier to use a bunch.
To locals: If there is something in the Trade column of my plant list you want a start for, I root-prune every so often to control the bamboo in my limited space. You are welcome to any starts for free, no trading. Let me know and come get it if it's available. Pick up only.

Thanks for all the good suggestions.

My neighbor has a bird feeder and there is a forest behind me which must have squirrel food in the spring.

I have never seen a shrew but I think they live here.

My spectabilis just had shoots so hopefully they just dig and don't eat?

In a panic, I bought a Critter Ridder product made from eggs. Only 1 day but so far so good.

This is probably way more than anyone wants to know but for those interested.

The squirrels or whatever it is do not seem to eating the shoots or harming the bamboo. I see holes and nearby shoots left untouched.

Just paranoid I guess.

I can again look at a squirrel without feeling the need to terminate with extreme prejudice.

I am again one with nature, unless it touches my bamboo.
