Back in the early 1990's I visited a friend in the Annapolis Valley where it is both colder and hotter than where I live on the coast. He had a bamboo which he got in Niagara Falls, Ontario. We're quite certain it's P. aureosulcata. It repeatedly froze to the ground in the early days and back then was, as I recall, a very small clump growing in clay loam in a very open site. Today he sent me pix and says that with the long stretch of mild winters and more tree protection it is gaining steam and could well top 15 feet plus this year.

And a couple more photos from the Annapolis Valley - same clump.

It's certainly is enjoying that rich valley soil. He nevers fertilizes by the way and says it can run in any direction to 10 feet.

johnw - It's great to see some decent sized stuff on the East Coast. I gives me more hope for the Phyllostachys on PEI.

The first two shoots on Borinda yulongshanensis in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Small but at least a start.

Three better shots of shoots on Borinda yulongshanensis.

A larger pic would show the hairs better but not possible to upload one.

Moriphen - Is this 2nd round of shooting only for Fargesia? Or do the Phllostachys do it also?

BM Alphonse Karr started putting up shoots last week and is putting several shoots well over 1" in diameter.

I spotted a Bambusa ventricosa shoot yesterday. It gets topkilled every Winter, but it got an early start on shooting this year, so it might actually size up this year.

Sadly no, Phyllostachys and all the smaller runners only shoot once. Occasionally however a running rhizome end will turn into a whip shoot and if you clear cut a lot of culms you may get survival shoots from the underground rhizome buds. Going back on topic some of my Fargesia's and my T. tessellatus will after the initial spring shooting period build up enough energy to to push 2nd summer shooting season and in some cases a 3rd fall shooting season.

FOURTH round of shoots starting for Pseudosasa guanxianensis now, this thing just never stops shooting! Also noteworthy about this plant is that it takes basically full sun in triple digit heat with no leaf discoloration so far, leaves sare staying very dark green. Very much superior to japonica in sun tolerance, proliferation of new culms, and running vigor, it seems so far.
God Bless,

Fargesia murielae decided it's time to start shooting again (2nd round this year). Lately it's been wet and hot wit a lot of sun exposure and it looks like murielae likes that. There's only one developed shoot, but there are dozens of rhizome buds appearing all around the clump.

Yesterday I spotted a large shoot in both the Phy. parvifolia and in the Bambusa vulgaris 'Vitata'. Admittedly they are both in pots sitting outside.

I was also looking at the shoots from my B. ventricosa that was planted outside. They are definitely the same diameter as the largest culms were last year. If there is a third round of shooting I could actually see it size up for the first time this year.
