Fall shooting thread

Post by utahraptor »

Is anyone else getting a second shooting? My Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Spectabilis' is shooting now in south central Kansas.

Some of my potted plants are shooting, but they're probably whips. Ph. propinqua 'Beijing' and H. tranquillans, for sure and maybe a couple of others. Both of those did not do much spring shooting -- maybe it was too hot?

Many of the potted plants that did shoot in spring did not leaf out well or create full-sized branches. I just couldn't keep them watered enough when they needed it.

I'm getting some fall shoots on propinqua, atrovaginata and the kwangsiensis.

My spectabilis had rhizomes on track to exceeding 10ft in all directions so my solution to letting off some of the steam was to let 7 of the rhizomes, some of them already around 6ft long head upwards to turn into whip shoots. While a bamboo is shooting, it seems to freeze the rhizome growth, or at least slow this one down.

Since this plant is probably already loaded up with starches, it will probably turn into a 15ft tall, 30 culm grove by next year. I think the spectabilis may even a more aggressive form of aureosulcata than the regular yellow groove. This plant literally came from a 1ft long piece of rhizome last spring, and all the old growth was thinned out from last year for a better look.

These whip shoots should be dividable in another 2 months, once they each manage to generate their own rhizomes.

My Bambusa pervariabilis 'viridistriatus' is sending all sorts of shoots this fall. These grow pretty slow, and I'd be real surprised if they harden off before winter sets in.

For the second year in a row, Phyllostachys arcana 'Luteosulcata' is producing tiny shoots late in the year. Last year it shot these all fall and winter.

Also, outdoor potted Bambusa multiplex 'Green Giant' is producing shoots about twice the diameter of the old ones. I am considering putting one of these in the ground this fall.

I am getting late summer -it is not fall until this weekend- shoots from Phy. aurea (as is typical), Phy. iridescens, my flowering Phy. glauca Yunzhu, and Phy. rubro. Also F. rufa Green Panda is shooting, but that is also typical.
Happy trails...

My Borinda angustissima put up a couple new shoots about a week ago. They outsized the clump, but I doubt they'll survive. I had late shoots last year that never developed fully either.

This is the only bamboo that has ever shot more than once a year for me.

I was rather surprised to spot some new Pseudosasa japonica shoots yesterday.

My japonica is shooting as well, I think it did the same thing last year.

I discovered yesterday evening that my Bambusa ventricosa has put up a 3/4 inch diameter shoot. If it survives it will be its largest diameter cane ever.

After only 3 days of having the greenhouse up, all the bamboos with fall shoots are clearly accelerating their progress.

On average, there's around a +5 to +10F of difference in the greenhouse, but species like the ventricosa kimmei have really turned up their rate of growth as shoots appear to be rising about 4 inches per day which is pretty good for tropical species. The rate of photosynthesis in there is unknown, but the physical growth is there as shoots are growing as fast as they can.

One thing that I find very interesting is that my heat sensor towards the middle of the greenhouse exposed to the full sun can easily get up above 100F while the heat sensor in complete shade in the greenhouse on the floor only rises from something like 62F up to 71F. I have no idea which temperature the growth of these new shoots are responding to. Maybe something in the middle, but I don't have the equipment to measure amount of energy produced each day. Tropical bamboos seem to respond to the warmer temperatures pretty quickly.

Phyllostachys aurea shooting like crazy. Shoots are most likely whip shoots (tightly barriered plant :P ), but they are already taller than "original" growth. We'll see if they can mature enough to survive the winter. Other bamboos have decided it's not smart to shoot this fall.
Shiroshima started branching out this fall again. Stupidity.
Several whips noticed around Pseudosasa japonica tsutsumiana. Hopefully they all survive the incoming winter.

Winter is coming.
