Another blizzard passed earlier today and another round of -10°F (-23°C) is forecast for tonight here.

Perhaps one is thinking, "Finally, a winter that's not unseasonably warm. Now's our chance!"

A colder winter:
profitable for a few,
not for the bamboo.

I should point out this article about the dangers of the Polar Vortex™.

My Bamboo List.

The legal issues that will arise when the undead walk the earth are legion, and addressing them all is well beyond what could reasonably be accomplished in this brief Essay. Indeed, a complete treatment of the tax issues alone would require several volumes.

Yikes. -4F in Chicago. I remember looking at one of those maps last week and saying that there was a -30F directly to the south of me (in upstate New York). Damn glad I don't live in those Mountains!

Also, on that first page, I can't get over that huge spot of waaayyy above 'normal' temps that is showing over most of Russia. Send that our way!

Well, another arctic blast is coming to the PNW this week. Lows are forecast to be in the very low teens here. Snow may follow next weekend here as well. These generally precede colder weather in the east as patterns move from west to east.

Predicted lows here are now: Tue: 16° F., Wed: 10° F., Thurs: 12° F. Might snow tonight, its 34° F. and rain/snow mix. I moved all the sensitive and previously burned boos to the garage today (the Super Bowl was over after the first play of the game!).

NWS warnings now in effect (I live in the Cascade foothills)...

...VERY COLD AIR RETURNS TO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST THIS WEEK...

CONFIDENCE IS HIGH IN A PERIOD OF VERY COLD CONDITIONS FOR THE
MIDDLE TO LATTER HALF OF THIS WEEK. CONSIDERABLE UNCERTAINTY
STILL EXISTS IN HOW COLD IT WILL GET. WHILE COLDER AIR WILL
ARRIVE ON TUESDAY...THE COLDEST PERIOD WILL BE WEDNESDAY THROUGH
FRIDAY...WITH THURSDAY LOOKING TO BE THE COLDEST DAY.

EXPECT TEMPERATURES WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY TO BE AT LEAST 15 TO
20 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL IN MOST AREAS. HIGHS WILL BE IN THE UPPER
20S TO MID 30S...AND LOWS WILL BE IN THE TEENS IN THE VALLEY.
EVEN COLDER CONDITIONS WILL BE FOUND IN THE CASCADES.

IN ADDITION TO THE COLD...EXPECT GUSTY EAST WINDS ACROSS THE
AREA...WITH BREEZY NORTH WINDS IN THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY.
THEREFORE...WIND CHILL READINGS WILL DIP INTO THE SINGLE DIGITS IN
THE VALLEY...BELOW ZERO IN THE GORGE...AND APPROACHING MINUS 20 IN
THE CASCADES.

CONFIDENCE IS MODERATE TO HIGH THAT A PACIFIC WEATHER SYSTEM WILL
ARRIVE ON SATURDAY THAT LOOKS TO BRING A PERIOD OF WINTRY WEATHER
TO PARTS OF THE REGION. SNOW...SLEET...AND FREEZING RAIN ARE
POSSIBLE...BUT CONFIDENCE IS LOW ON THE SPECIFICS AT THIS TIME.

RESIDENTS ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE CASCADES SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR
AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF VERY COLD CONDITIONS. THOSE PLANNING
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES SHOULD STAY TUNED TO THE LATEST FORECASTS.

Polar vortex lows for Thursday, pressing farther south and east and west... its been snowing here the last 2 days. Temp is dropping fast and the east wind is supposed to pick up really strong tomorrow (like 50+ MPH). Great Lakes ice is now up to 70% coverage and climbing.
