Interesting temperature experiments with B. Vent. If its roots take hold might make an interesting bamboo up there.

Also what about Bambusa textilis 'Kanapaha'. This site list min. at 17 while B. Vent. min. is listed at 21.

Hmmm...another tropical to try in Southern Indiana. I will add Bambusa textilis 'Kanapaha' to the list along with "Clone X", which I have yet to test.

Buy it under the "brand name" Bambusa textilis 'Mutabilis' for 1/2 the cost of Bambusa textilis 'Kanapaha'.

Wow, does anyone know of any big timber bamboo that would grow here?
By big i mean cull size and no lower branches so you can clearly see the culms. I could even put it in our barn for the winter so there would not be any winchill and our barn is around 30 feet tall.

I think your best bet might be Ph. Atrovaginata. I think it has one of the coldest ratings and can get some size. 2+ inches, not to tall.
Anyone else have a cold guess ?

I am in an area of around 8 zone or 7b.

And is there a bamboo thats a clumper that will do ok and get some size to it?

Well here is the historical data for my area. It should be pretty close.

Record lows will most likely kill any clumper. I stick with Runners and trench around them or use a barrier.

What is everyones thought on Phyllostachys vivax for a good bamboo, i understand it would probly topkill each year but this boo looks really coool and it gets HUGE?

Jordan, I don't think the Vivax is worth trying up there (it has never wintered over down here)...your largest bamboo will be the hardiest one that you can find and Vivax falls well short of being at the top of the hardiness list. If you can baby an Atrovaginata for 6-7 years it will get large but Bissetii, Yellow Groove, Spectabilis, Harbin Inversa are about as hardy as you can get. Propinqua beijing may belong on that list and if you can obtain a Parvifolia it might also. Nuda is a notch below the above despite it being 'the hardiest Phyllostachys and it HATES cold winds.

Pick one from the list above and do everything you can to protect it for the first 5 years and that will be the largest bamboo you can grow.

And as far as the lowest ever recorded temps, I am not going to worry about that. those temps haven't been seen in over 30 years.

I would think 15f* would be very very rare here.

I couldnt get the graph to copy for me so i got the table instead, what does everyone think? Im reading that vivax can grow in anywhere from -20 to -5, so it should grow here if i put it in th4e barn and get rid of windchill.
